
Phobia is defined as irrational fear of a situation, an object or an activity that causes a person to avoid it at all costs. Health professionals would say that this irrational fear interferes with the daily file of a person. Phobia manifests itself through anxiety and feelings of panic that are generally out of proportion with what caused it. It is estimated that between 7 and 12% of the population in general will suffer from a form of phobia.
The most common phobia are the ones involving animals or insects ; there are also phobia of heights, of taking an airplane, of thunder, doctors, needles, dentists, of speaking in public, of the dark. Often present in children, they are not then considered abnormal.
Symptoms :
· anxiety
· excessive perspiration
· weakened motor control
· increase heart rate
· feelings of weakness, lack of courage, loss of self-esteem
· shortness of breath, redness, dizziness, nausea
